之前在推文里寫過，英語中的“熟詞偏義”現象很常見，有時候某個單詞的表面意思是這個，但是連起來說就是另一個含義。比如說“on the game”，有些人可能就會理解成“游戲在線”。

  BUT，這個詞真正的含義其實是：working as a prostitute……牛津詞典對“prostitute”這個詞的解釋為：a person who has sex for money。

  舉個例子：

  She went on the game to pay for her drug habit.

  為了負擔得起吸毒行為，她去賣淫了。

  所以大家知道了吧，“on the game”指的是“賣淫;出賣身體”。所以大家千萬不要隨便這么用哈，不然老外還以為你從事特殊服務呢，尤其是有些國家賣淫合法，萬一人腦子沒轉過來產生誤會就難辦了。

  舉個例子：

  It's a secret, so don't give the game away, will you?

  這是個秘密，所以千萬得別穿幫，你做得到吧?

  跟“give the game away”含義相似的還有“blow sb's cover”，“blow the gaff””，以及“can't hold your water”。

  劍橋詞典對“can't hold sb's water”解釋為“to be unable to keep a secret or unable to stop yourself from talking about something”，指的是某人對某事“無法保密或者保持沉默不談”。

  舉個例子：

  He's a good bloke - he wouldn't blow the gaff on us.

  他是個好人，他不會泄密的。

  I bet Teddy can’t hold his water about this one. He's itching for someone to ask his opinion.

  我打賭Teddy對這件事保持不了沉默。他渴望有人征求他的意見。

  be ahead of the game

  劍橋詞典對“be ahead of the game”的解釋為：“to know more about the most recent developments in a particular subject or activity than the people or companies you are competing against.”

  意思是比競爭對手更加了解某一特定事件或活動的最新動態，可以理解為“比競爭對手消息更靈通”。

  舉個例子：

  A very extensive research and development programme ensures that we're ahead of the game.

  大量的研究和發展計劃確保了我們的領先地位。

  跟“be ahead of the game”含義相反的短語為“have a passing/slight/nodding acquaintance with sb/sth”，意思是指對某人或者某學科略知一二。

  舉個例子：

  I'm afraid I have only a nodding acquaintance with his works.

  我有點擔心我對他的工作只知一二。

  the games (that) people play

  劍橋詞典吧“the games people play”解釋為“the ways in which people behave in order to get an advantage”，中文含義可以理解為“行業行事規則”。

  舉個例子：

  Not telling the whole truth is one of the games that people play.

  不說出所有真相是人們贏得優勢的方式之一。
